Queridos amigos,

Honrar a nuestros ancestros.

Dear Friends,

Join us on the hidden mountain to welcome home our ancestors and loved ones during our annual Day of the Dead celebration. Día de los Muertos is a traditional Mexican holiday that we have begun to celebrate at Deer Park Monastery.

Join our Southern California sangha to celebrate Día de los Muertos on Sunday November 2, 2025.

Traditionally, Día de los Muertos is a multi-day celebration held on November 1st and 2nd. On the first day, saints are celebrated, that is, all those who passed on at a young age (babies and children). November 2 is the day commemorating deceased adults. Offerings are made to the ancestors on the second day.

Honoring Ancestors

Our ancestors showed the way for us to come into the world and they have blessed us with many gifts, lessons, and traits that co-create our lived experiences as human beings on Earth. Although our ancestors’ actions may at times have been unskillful, it is important to honor all that they have given to us – this body, this gift of life, and the good seeds they have sown in us.

In the tradition of Día de los Muertos, it is also said that the “veil” between the physical and non-physical world is thin during this time, allowing our beloved ones to make contact with us through signs, symbols, messages, and sometimes direct communication.

Families will often visit cemeteries to clean and decorate the graves of their loved ones with candles, flowers, and other offerings. This is a time to share stories and memories, which strengthens the connection between the living and those who have transitioned while honoring the continuation across generations.

The Ofrenda (Altar)

During Día de los Muertos, offerings are made to ancestors who have transitioned. Families create elaborate ofrendas in their homes and at cemeteries to honor and welcome back the spirits of their deceased loved ones. Offerings may be adorned with candles, sugar skulls, flowers, photos, food and beverages that they liked, and other symbolic items. We encourage you to bring offerings such as these with you to Deer Park for our shared ofrenda and ceremony in the Oak Grove.

Our monastics are partnering with local Spanish-speaking practitioners who will lead songs, readings, and prayers in Spanish and English for all to participate during the ceremony.

This is also a time to honor our beloved teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh, and his continuation that transcends physical form and continues to spread the miracle of mindfulness across the world. Please enjoy Thầy’s poetry and teachings on birth and death below.
